The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology is the result of a merger of the former Universität Karlsruhe (TH) and the former Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe. With about 8000 employees and an annual budget of 700 million €, KIT is the largest technical research institution within Germany. KIT has a strong reputation as one of Germany’s university of excellence, aiming to set the highest standards for education, research and innovation.

Prof. Dr. Rudi Studer will be the coordinator for KIT. He is Full Professor at KIT and director at the Karlsruhe Service Research Institute (KSRI) and at the Institute AIFB (Applied Informatics and Formal Description Methods). His research concerns all aspects of Semantic Technologies and their applications in semantic data management & search. Rudi Studer has led his research groups to become a world-class institution in Semantic Technologies and has played a leading role in establishing highly acknowledged international conferences and journals. He has been involved in numerous EU-funded projects and national projects. Examples of EU-funded projects related to the specific topic of semantic data management include NeOn, Active, Render, SOA4All, X-Media and PlanetData. Rudi Studer was founding president of the Semantic Web Science Association (SWSA) joint editor-in-chief of the Journal on Web Semantics and co-founder of ontoprise GmbH.

Within SemData, KIT will participate in the packages on scalability and quality (WP3 and WP1, respectively) bringing in its expertise in scalable RDF data storage, distributed RDF query processing and search as well as its theoretical insights and newly developed systems for data integration and cleaning.
